Hammond Organ/Leslie cab sound

Postby T-Bone Bruce » Sun Sep 16, 2007 1:14 pm

I've been listening to one of the "Superharps" albums with the late Carey Bell on it and noticed that he gets a sound like a Leslie speaker on some of the tracks. I reckoned it couldn't be from Carey himself, so I searched harp L's archive and found that Carey had been known to use a Cordovox rotating speaker cabinet, in conjunction with his regular amp. It's quite a unique sound, and I decided I'd like to use it occasionly (not too much...). I spotted a Danelectro "Rocky Road" rotary speaker sim pedal yesterday in the reduced section of a music shop, at a reasonable price and thought I'd give it a go.
I had to do the "gain mod" on it so it has unity gain, without it there is a 3dB boost even with the gain control right down. But it's an interesting effect and I'm looking forward to trying it out "live"
What on earth was I thinking when I played THAT?

That's cool, I think is is good to have a couple effects just to occasionally have a different sound. Even if you only use it once a gig or jam it can be a good thing.

The monster that is feedback lies in your preamp, it is fed by gain and is awakened by coupling between your mic and speaker.

I've heard he use a chorus pedal sometimes.
I tried one back in -80's and it was very hard to play if you use too much of it. And if i crank it all way up it sound like a hysterical hammond. It was fun!.

He definitely used that chorus pedal on tour: I remember his guitarist rolling his eyes when I asked about it, saying Carey wanted to use that sound all the time and the band wouldn't let him. On the organ sound issue, someone on Harp-L once said that a combination of amp tremelo and a delay pedal could do a pretty good Hammond sound, but I've never managed to find that at home. However, I was trying it with Valco-made amps, and maybe it works better with the typical BF Fender vibrato. I mention this in case anyone else has trem & a delay at home and time to fool with it. Bruce, I didn't know Dano made a rotating pedal, so I may try one of those: like the man says, can be worth it for just one song a night. When I brought a delay along regularly, I would only use it on slow blues or blues chromatic (one setting for Chess sounds) or rock tunes (another setting for rock, Popper-ish longer delay), but it was nice to be able to go there.

I can understand why Carey's band wouldn't let him use it all the time!
It's not what I'd want all the time, in fact too much would drive me nuts, but I thought it'd be a bit of fun. I'm going to mod it so the LED flashes at the rate of the effect. I'll try it on "house of the rising sun" when I next get asked to play on that.

Reminds me of when.... I was playing a gig with a blues band and I had a cheesy PV digital delay that I had not yet given up on.. Well this older black bluesman spied that and asked to use it ...the other guys in the band wanted to string me up for letting him see it. I thought Jimi was reborn once or twice that night...Still have that damn piece of no-tone crap... and I keep looking at the Lone Wolf product and wondering if I should spring for it--or would I be the new Jimi-style harpist...?

I saw him use a Boss OC-2 octave pedal. Try it with both octaves cranked up. It'll give you an organ like effect. It doesn't work well with all amps. I've heard people claim hat he used a Boss Harmonist pedal.
